Cleveland ramps up security ahead of Republican National Convention

The city of Cleveland, Ohio city has spent close to $50 million bolstering security measures ahead of this week’s Republican National Convention.

Around 3,000 federal agents from The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Secret Service will be present, CNN reported. Over 1,500 police officers and sheriff’s deputies equipped with body cameras will also be present for the convention. Officers will use body armor, armored trucks, M14 and AR-15 assault rifles and a bomb robot to police the convention.

Authorities have cordoned off roads and put in traffic restrictions around the convention’s location at the Quicken Loans Arena. Drones and airplanes have also been restricted from flying over the conference area.

The convention runs from July 18 to July 21 and is expected to draw 50,000 attendees, as well as a significant number of protesters.
