Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has been sentenced to life in prison, plus 30 years, by a federal judge in Brooklyn. While authorities have not mentioned where, Reuters reports that he will likely serve the sentence at ADX Florence in Colorado, America's most secure "Supermax" prison.

The prison, nicknamed "Alcatraz of the Rockies," currently has 376 inmates held in solitary cells, each with a narrow window through which only the sky is visible.

Furnishings include a TV, lamp, stainless steel sink, toilet and mirror, fixed concrete stool, desk and a bed with a thin mattress.

There is also a stainless steel shower cubicle that runs on a timer to prevent inmates from flooding their cells.

Human interaction in the facility is kept to a minimum. Inmates are held alone for about 23 hours a day, even eating their meals in solitude.

They can watch religious services and educational programs on the TV in their cell and have access to a commissary.

Special restrictions are in place to ensure prisoners cannot exert influence or make threats beyond the facility walls. They are not allowed to move around without being escorted, and head counts are conducted seven times a day, according to the New York Times.

Chapo has escaped two maximum security prisons in Mexico — the first in 2001 using a laundry cart and the help of corrupt prison guards, and the second 14 years later, through a tunnel.

No inmate has escaped ADX since it opened in 1994.
