Far-right lawmaker Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil's presidential election on Sunday, promising to clean up corruption, shrink the state and crack down on crime.

According to the Guardian, the 63-year-old Bolsonaro secured 55.1 percent of the votes after 99.9 percent were counted, defeating leftist candidate Fernando Haddad, who secured 44.8 percent of votes.
According to Reuters, the former army captain, with close ties to the military, has alarmed skeptics with comments seen as denigrating women, gays and racial minorities.
Some in Brazil are also concerned Bolsonaro, an admirer of Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and a proponent of using torture on leftist opponents, will curtail human rights, infringe upon civil liberties and clamp down on freedom of speech.
In his acceptance speech, Bolsonaro promised to lead the country according to the Bible and the country's constitution.
