Six inmates who broke into the armoury of a prison in southern Taiwan and held a number of staffers hostage committed suicide early on Thursday, ending a 14-hour standoff.

A hostage situation at Kaohsiung Prison took place after six prisoners attacked a staffer with broken scissors at the clinic and took his keys.

The men entered the visiting room and tried to break the glass windows to escape, failing and triggering the alarm. The inmates initially took four hostages, but Deputy Warden Lai Chen-jung and head guard Wang Shih-tsang offered to swap places with the four staffers.

The prisoners then broke into the armoury and took four assault rifles, six handguns and 233 bullets. The warden negotiated with the inmates, but rejected their demand of providing two vehicles for them. He offered to be a hostage instead and swapped places with the deputy warden.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m, the inmates committed suicide by shooting themselves. Apart from the six inmates, no one was killed or injured during the dramatic siege.
