Japanese tech giant Panasonic this week unveiled a prototype device that transmits data via human touch.

The technology was on display at the Ceatec Japan 2016 electronics show in the city of Chiba, near Tokyo, PC World reported.

The data is sent through a radio field on human skin. The technology is safe, as the currents don’t flow inside the body

For example, a person with a transmitter can send data, such as a color code, to a lamp with a sensor. The lamp can then change its color to match the code.

Panasonic predicts the data transmission system could have more practical uses in the future, such as exchanging contact information via handshake, or unlocking doors by just a touch.

The technology is currently too big for practical use, but Panasonic is confident it can make the device as small as needed, if there is demand for the system.

RUNDOWN SHOWS:
1. Depiction of data transmitted by radio field technology
2. A person transmits a color code to a lamp
3. Depiction of exchanging contact information via handshake
4. A person unlocks a door by touching
