Police shot and killed an armed black man in St. Louis on Wednesday, drawing an angry crowd of as many as 150 people at the scene of the shooting, some of whom reportedly hurled objects at officers, according to a Reuters report.

The incident happened as police were issuing a search warrant and according to local reports, saw the death of 18-year-old suspect Mansur Ball-Bey.

"Detectives were looking for guns, looking for violent felons, looking for people that have been committing the crimes in the neighborhood," St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson told journalists, according to Reuters.

Police say that when they arrived with a search warrant for guns and narcotics at a north St. Louis home at around 11:30 a.m., two armed men escaped through the back.

One suspect was allegedly wielding two guns, while the other, believed to have been Ball-Bey, was armed with a weapon with an extended clip. When confronted, police say Ball-Bey pointed his gun at two responding officers.

The police officers fired, striking Ball-Bey, who eventually collapsed after making an attempt to flee. The other suspect, identified by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as black and in his late teens, managed to get away.

Ball-Bey, whom police say was in possession of a stolen gun from Rolla, Missouri, about an hour and half's drive away from St. Louis, died at the scene.

After executing the search warrant, authorities say they found a total of four weapons, as well as some crack cocaine.

The shooting came less than two weeks since unrest broke out in nearby Ferguson on the anniversary of the police shooting death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown and on the one-year anniversary of another officer-involved shooting.
