This year's fall equinox takes place on Saturday, September 22, 9:54 p.m. Eastern time, marking the end of summer, according to the weather channel.

The autumn equinox, also known as the September equinox, occurs when the sun crosses the earth's equator from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere.

During the winter, Earth's Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the sun, and during the summer it tilts toward the sun. The shift in Earth's tilt is what causes the change in seasons.

During the equinox, day and night will be balanced to about 12 hours around the world.

The Autumn equinox usually takes places on September 22, 23 or 24 in the Northern Hemisphere.

After this, the days will start to get shorter while the nights get longer as it enters the winter season.

The term "equinox" comes from two latin words meaning equal and night.

This occasion is celebrated in different parts in the world, with some cultures the event by spending time with loved ones.
