Linwood Lambert, a 46-year-old construction worker, was only supposed to go to the ER for medical attention on May 4, 2013, but he ended up dying in police custody. No charges were filed. Over two years later, the case is receiving new attention after MSNBC aired a report on Wednesday along with police and surveillance videos.

The series of events that led to Lambert’s death began when officers responded to a disturbance call at a motel in South Boston, Virginia at 4:28 a.m. and came to Lambert’s door. Finding Lambert’s actions and comments disturbing, the officers handcuffed him and decided to take him to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, reports Reuters.

Once the officers pulled up at the hospital at 5:03 a.m., Lambert kicked out the police car window. When officers opened his door, Lambert sprinted towards the hospital door and crashed into the building’s glass doors.

Officers immediately tased Lambert, causing him to fall to the ground. Officers then shackled his legs. Throughout the entire ordeal, the officers used their Tasers a total of 20 times. One officer discharged her Taser 15 times.

MSNBC — using figures obtained from company device reports — found that the three officers discharged their Tasers a total of 20 times in roughly half an hour, which MSNBC says amounts to approximately 87 seconds of tasing. This, when a single, 5-second Taser discharge generally incapacitates a person.

Police then decided to bring Lambert to jail. By the time the officers arrived at the jail, Lambert was unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at 6:23 a.m.

According to MSNBC, Lambert’s autopsy lists “acute cocaine intoxication” as the cause of his death. His family disagrees with the autopsy report. They have filed a civil suit against the police alleging that excessive force and denial of medical care was the cause of Lambert’s death.
